Victor Mohapi

SABT Development Programme Teacher

Victor studied dance in 1993 at Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) in Newtown. At this time he also worked with a group of dancers in Alexandra called ‘Children of the Rainbow Nation’ (CORN). From 1998 to 2001 he collaborated with Archa Theatre of the Czech Republic and taught for MIDM.

In 2001, he was approached by SABT to establish a dance studio on the Alexandra township. The studio has subsequently grown to include in excess of ninety dancers. Victor teaches the beginner levels and in 2011 he entered eleven dancers in the Cecchetti examinations with all participants passing with seven distinctions.

 

Angelina Sekonya

SABT Development School Teacher

 

Between 1986 and 1988, Angelina and her friends performed in their own dance group called the Bixties. She then enrolled at the Johannesburg Dance Foundation in 1988 and in 1990 received a scholarship sponsored by Schweppes to attend the two – year Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) Teacher's Training Course. Angelina joined the MIDM Company in 1992 remaining with the Company until 1996.

Between 1990 and 1997, she also studied at the Kathorus College of Education for a Teachers Diploma receiving her Junior Primary Teachers Diploma). From 1994 to 1997, she taught dance as an extra mural activity at the First National College between 1994 to1997.

In 2002, she joined The South African Ballet Theatre's Development School at the Zonkizizwe Primary School in Katlehong.

 

Fiona Brown

SABT Development School Teacher

Fiona Brown was brought up in Carletonville where she studied the Cecchetti Method Ballet, Tap, Modern dance, Piano and Voice and was active on the Debating Society. After Matric, she studied for an H.Dip Ed at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Johannesburg College of Education specializing in music and majoring in Bio Sciences and Geography. During this time, she continued with her ballet training, and began to choreograph shorter works for other teachers and dancers.

After leaving College, Fiona worked for several large companies, in Quality Assurance, Packaging, Research and Development, as well as Industrial Safety and Hygiene.

Fiona was then asked to join the NGO Alcohol and Drug Concerns, where she served as Secretary, Counselor to the family and friends of young addicts, and helped run a halfway house for women recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Throughout this time, Fiona continued to take classes and to teach as a locum. She was introduced to Canada’s “We have better things to do” programme and developed a strong belief in the power of the arts to keep children away from the influences that lead to drug taking and addiction.

In 1995, her mentor, José Pretorius, encouraged her to turn to full-time teaching and she opened a small studio in East Gauteng, teaching ballet, contemporary and jazz. She has produced several award winners and has pupils dancing with The South African Ballet Theatre, in New York and at the London Contemporary Dance School. She is a Certified Adjudicator with the National Eisteddfod Academy and holds the I.S.T.D Associate Diploma (Cecchetti Faculty with full registration in London) and in 2010 she achieved 98% for her Cecchetti Anatomy and Physiology examinations.

In October 2009, Fiona conducted a morning workshop at Uncle Tom’s Community Centre in Soweto, and as a result, has begun teaching for SABT’s Development School in that area as well as in Alexandra. In 2011 she entered several dancers into the Cecchetti Society examinations with a 100% pass rate. 

 

Candace Osbourn

Development School Coordinator

Candace was born and raised in Port Elizabeth where she started dancing at the age of five with Marie Gwen Wells. She performed and competed in several competitions including her favorite dance forms of classical Ballet, Modern, Spanish, Highland, Tap, Hip Hop and Contemporary dance.

When she matriculated in 1994, she moved to Cape Town, where she attended the Waterfront Theatre College for four years, gaining her I.S.T.D. (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) Associate qualification in ballet and modern. She also completed an Advanced Performance Diploma and participated in drama classes.

Once she completed her dance education, she moved to Johannesburg, performing at various Sun International Casinos including Sun City, Carnival City, Gold Reef City and the Carousel as well as for several corporate functions for clients such as Vodacom, Barloworld, Clover, Microsoft, Murray & Roberts, Avroy Shlainand Toyota.

In 2004 she joined Dick Foster Productions and Gary Musick Productions in the USA performing in productions for Celebrity Cruises, a 5 star cruise liner including the Galaxy and Constellation. In 2005 she traveled to Italy where she joined Selection Productions and performed in shows for Costa Cruises.

During these contracts, she was also taught aerial skills such as Webb and Hoops by a tutor from ‘Cirque Du Soleil’.

In early 2006, Candace joined The South African Ballet Theatre as Development School Coordinator managing the six Development schools in programmes in Soweto, Alexandra, Mamelodi, Sophiatown, Braamfontein and Melville.

In 2011, Candace entered seven students for the Cecchetti Test examinations – all seven dancers passed with Merit or higher results. Candace has actively expanded the Development School programme to include free lessons to dancers from previously disadvantaged areas such as Sophiatown and to the inner city. She also coordinates the annual Year – End concert for the Development School which brings over three hundred dancers together to perform for their families and friends. Her portfolio include fundraising and the day-to-day management of the programme.

Hanlie Wydeman

 

SABT Development School Teacher

                          

                                                 

Hanlie matriculated from Afrikaanse Hoërmeisieskool and enrolled at the Premiere Learning Landscape Institution where she studied for a B.Com in Arts Management. She graduated in 2006 majoring in several subjects including ballet, contemporary dance, jazz, modern dance and tap. 

Hanlie has extensive sales experience in the fashion industry and has also worked as a Personal Assistant, administrator and functions coordinator. 

She is currently employed by Virgin Active where she has worked through the ranks from Group Exercise Manager to Club V Max Manager in Montana, Gauteng


In 2007, Hanlie opened her own private ballet school (Prestige College) and continues to teach at The South African Ballet Theatre’s Development Schools in Tshwane where she has taught since 2006. 

Hanlie holds the IDTA Teachers qualification in modern dance and hip-hop and in 2011 successfully entered dancers from the Development School into the Cecchetti examinations.

Cresendo Haas

SABT Development School Teacher

 

CresandoAnnouvelle Haas was born in 1988 and started ballet at age three with ZanelleWessels at the Eersterus Civic Centre. At age six she was asked by Elesia Lombard Ceronio to join the Beverly Acquisto Studio.

As a student, Cresandoperformed with PACT Ballet as an extra in productions such as ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, ‘The Nutcracker’ and ‘Cinderella’ at the South African State Theatre as well as in ‘La Bayadére’ at the Joburg Theatre.

She attained her Cecchetti Advanced 1 in 2005.

In 2004, Cresando travelled to Switzerland for the annual Prix du Lausanne competition.

Cresando qualified as a Cecchetti Associate teacher in 2009 under Joy Cooper, a senior examiner. She has her own studio in Eersterus and teaches at various nursery schools in Pretoria.

In August 2011, Cresando joined The South African Ballet Theatre’s Development School as a teacher for the Braamfontein School. The Development School offers free ballet training to inner city children at the National School of the Arts.
