2012 GRADUATE PROGRAMME AUDITIONS
Auditions for the 2012 Graduate programme took place on October 11th with ten successful candidates being awarded positions in the programme.
The SABT Graduate progamme is the ultimate gap year for dance enthusiasts! The programme offers a unique opportunity to train for either six months or a year with a professional ballet company and experience first-hand the career of a professional ballet dancer. This exposure also enables amateur dancers to personally experience whether they are equipped physically, emotionally and mentally for the rigours of a full-time ballet career. The course exposes the Graduate to the world of the professional stage – aspects such as lighting design, set design and costuming. Successful Graduate applicants will participate in the professional company’s classes, rehearsals and productions of a high professional standard, produced by The South African Ballet Theatre.
The successful applicants are: Roxanne Smith, Monique Fivaz, Nerine Frambs, Kaylee McGinn, Monica Murana, Emma Campbell, Caitlin Smith, Ruth de Borchgrave and Thabang Mabaso.
SABT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
On Saturday, October 22nd 2011, six dancers from the SABT Development programme successfully auditioned for the Johannesburg Youth Ballet (JYB). JYB is a non-profit dance company formed in 1976 after a group of dancers was invited by the International Festival of Youth Orchestras and Performing Arts to perform at a festival in Aberdeen, Scotland. At the time, its founder Audrey King flouted the political realities of the time, and selected a group of racially integrated dancers to perform at the festival. Since then they have toured the world to locations such as Italy, Israel, China and Britain. JYB presents an annual season in Johannesburg and has been the breeding ground for many dancers who have gone on to enjoy successful careers.
The SABT Development dancers look forward to working with dancers from other studios in and around Gauteng and will certainly benefit from the experience. Nqobile Radebe from the SABT Development School – Soweto was accepted as a member of JYB, along with Nomthandazo Nkosi, Patricia Nkanyana, Mahlatse Ramonala, Koketso Mangane, Nomsa Motha and Mahlatse Sachane from the SABT / Air Products Development School – Alexandra. JYB Artistic Director, Kate Retief was impressed with all six dancers, citing their musicality and the ease with which they picked up the unset work among the reasons for their being selected.
